The Rajshahi Division is named after Rajshahi District. Dominated by various feudal Rajas, Maharajas and Zamindars of mixed origins throughout history, the name is a compound of the words Raj and Shahi, both of which can be translated into reign or kingdom. Archaic spellings in the English language also included Rajeshae. The capital city of the division was formerly known as Rampur Boalia but was later renamed to Rajshahi too, to match the name of the district.
Rajshahi Division was created in 1829 by the British Indian Govt. Then the capital of the division was Darjeeling. A few years later the capital moved to Rangpur. After few years it again move to Jalpaiguri. In 1947 the Partition of India led to the division splitting into two. The lion half of the division became part of East Bengal and another gone to West Bengal, India which later made two division, Malda and Jalpaiguri division in West Bengal. The capital of Rajshahi Division falls in West Bengal, India. So in August 1947, Rajshahi city Becomes Capital of Rajshahi Division as well as Rajshahi District. In January 2010 the Rangpur Division split out from The Rajshahi division. Now Rajshahi division justification over eight district in North Bangladesh.
Rajshahi is well known for its fruit, particularly for mango and lichi. Rajshahi also produces a lot of crops and vegetables like potato, carrot, rice, onion, wheat, sugarcane, pulses, spices, banana etc.
